The newspaper article tells us that M. Fred Thomas brought with him from Zurich, Switzerland samples of spun rayon, the first man-made fibers. Realizing the possibilities of this new fiber, Pennsylvania businessmen offered to buy all the rayon yarn that could be produced. Fitchburg Yarn Co.,, which languished in receivership, was chosen to produce the product. Mr. Thomas was installed as manager and the mill began to prosper. Within two years, the debt was paid off and Mr. Thoma became president. With a few years, Watatic Spinning Mills and Wachusett Spinning Mills came into being and Mr. Thoma became president of those companies. He also founded the Fitchburg Spinners Sales Corp., of which he was the first president. Under his direction in July, 1926, spun rayon was made in Fitchburg for the first time in history. The new facric was introduced under the tradename "SASE". |
